Importance of Janmashtami
The verses in the Bhagavad-Gita say:
Yadaa Yadaa Hi Dharmasya Glaanir-bhavati Bhaarata
Abhyut-thaanam-adharmasya Tadaat-maanam Sri-jaam-yaham
Paritraanaaya Saadhunaam Vinaashaaya cha Dush-kritaam
Dharma Sansthaapa-naarthaay Sambhavaami Yuge Yuge
Which means whenever there will be predominance of evil and decline of Dharma (righteousness), I will reincarnate to establish Dharma, to kill the evil and to save the good.
Bhagvaan Krishna was born to free the earth from all kinds of evil and its sources.
The main significance of Janmashtami is to encourage goodwill and to discourage bad will. The Bhagavad Gita is perhaps the greatest spiritual gift of Janmashtami to the Hindu. In addition, the message of love - for one another, and for God - was also emphasized by Krishna. Krishna Jayanti also celebrates togetherness. The holy occasion brings people together, thus it signifies unity.
Spiritual Significance of Janmashtami
The birth of Lord Krishna and the rituals associated with it portray the symbolic significance of the highest truth. The prayers, bhajans and the fast are all the Sadhanas or the spiritual practises that aid in the purity of mind to attain the truth which is Bhagvaan ji. The observances on the day when Krishna is to be born in the midnight, marks one's preparation with spiritual practises to receive the truth, which is the birth of Krishna. Thus Janmashtami serves as yet another reminder to seek the Lord or one's true self, the ultimate truth , which alone can bestow true bliss. Since Krishna is said to be 'Anandaswarupa' (blissful form) finding Him alone is pure bliss.
